About David Hunt
In approaching the landscape I avoid use of the camera, favoring instead the slow and sometimes uncomfortable process of drawing and painting in the field. A snapshot often fixes and deadens a landscape, while continuous engagement with a site keeps alive its active, temporal quality. During the time that I confront and respond to a single landscape with pencil and paint, the condition of light and atmosphere, vegetation and human elements, can alter considerably. Throughout a year of painting I will experience the challenge of an entire circle of seasons and find elements in the landscape often overlooked by others. I believe in the statement trees have character. Each one is individual as is each clump of grass or piece of rock. By depicting a feature in paint I save it for the eye even when it is lost from the land. I want my paintings to produce a result that is unified as much by a feeling for the Spirit of a place as by the procedure I used in painting it.
